Food: Roasted Halloween Pumpkin Seeds

I hate wasting food. I'm the kind of person who always leaves a restaurant with a bag full of left-overs and makes diligent grocery lists to make sure no food goes wasted. This has nothing to do with saving money, but that I just don't want to waste food. As a matter of fact, I've even asked restaurants to charge me the full price but just give me a smaller portion.

However, each year I throw out perfectly edible pumpkin seeds after I've carved my annual Jack-O-Lantern simply because I don't know what to do with them.

This year rather than throwing the pumpkin seeds out I used them to create Roasted Halloween Pumpkin Seeds and they're healthy and delicious.

Now, I can enjoy both the carved pumpkin and its seeds!

Roasted Halloween Pumpkin Seeds
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups of pumpkin seeds
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. margarine, melted
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. garlic powder
  • 2 tsp. worcestershire sauce
Directions:
Mix all the ingredients together and bake the seeds on a cookie sheet for 1 hour at 275 degrees.

Enjoy!

Fashion: Natural & Cruelty-Free Waterproof Makeup

Everyone wants to look good on the beach, and I'm no exception. However, looking effortless and casually chic on the beach is hard work. My pre-beach vacation to-do list was a mile long...get in shape, eat right, go swimsuit shopping, get a mani/pedi and on and on. The last thing on my list was to get waterproof makeup, and by waterproof makeup I don't mean having a smoky eye on the beach, that wouldn't look effortless or casually chic. I just wanted some minimal makeup that would withstand the heat, humidity, and some splashing.

However, most waterproof makeup is not natural or cruelty-free. I wanted to look good on the beach, but still maintain my values. Also, I didn't want to spend a fortune buying waterproof makeup that I would only use for a few days. I found a healthy balance of affordable, natural and cruelty-free makeup with the following products which helped me create a natural, effortless, and casually chic look on the beach.

Josie Maran Argan Oil: Too much sun can dry out your skin and so you want to keep your skin moisturized without becoming greasy. This oil instantly sinks into the skin and creates a nice base for your waterproof makeup.

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15: This is a great primer which helps make all makeup last longer. Also it has SPF protection without being greasy. I used to not like primers, but now that I've found this one, I wear it everyday. It helps foundation last longer and helps spread the color more evenly.

Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup Oil Free SPF 15: Although this foundation isn't marketed as waterproof, it didn't rub off even when I went snorkeling. It really lasts for a long time and gives a sheer wash of color to your face which just makes your skin look perfect and even without looking like you've got a lot of makeup on or that you're trying too hard.

Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Waterproof Concealer: This stuff really works, it helps mask any redness and also works great as an undereye concealer.

Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes! Waterproof Mascara: This is the only natural, cruelty-free waterproof mascara that I found, and it actually works. I went swimming in waterfalls with this on and it didn't smudge once.

Benefit Cosmetics Benetint: This tint kind of has a cult following and for good reason. It's a great cheek and lip stain that stays on for hours, plus it looks completely natural and is completely natural.

General Tip: For waterproof makeup always look for water based formulas, they are less likely to slide off from the heat and humidity and won't clog your pores.

Fashion: Swimsuit Shopping Can Be Fun? (Using a Personal Stylist)

If you're like me, then shopping for swimsuits and trying on bathing suit after bathing suit and scrutinizing how you look in a full length mirror with bad lighting is about as much as getting a root canal.

With a Hawaii trip coming up within less than a month, I was in desperate need of a swimsuit intervention. I like to shop, but I've always avoided swimsuit shopping because the whole process can be so demoralizing. I've always left the store with a so-so swimsuit that I overpaid for and with my self-esteem left behind on the dressing room floor.

But, not yesterday! Using a personal stylist made all the difference. I've never used a personal stylist for help before, but I thought to myself that if there was ever a time to ask for help then swimsuit shopping was it.

I called ahead earlier in the week and made an appointment, and the stylist asked me my size, my favorite colors and in general the look that I was going for.

When I got to my appointment, a dressing room was full of swimsuit options. We immediately weeded out the ones that didn't appeal to me and we went from there.

The stylist had honest feedback about which styles worked for me and which ones didn't. The best part was that she dug through all the racks (including the sales racks) and brought me all the options already picked through for my right size and color. All I had to do was try everything on and let her know if I felt fabulous or not.

I left the store with 5 swimsuits, 2 cover-ups and a pair of sandals...and my self-esteem still intact. She showed me how to mix and match everything to get more looks and even brought up a tailor to make sure everything fit perfectly. Who knew that swimsuits could be tailored??

After only a few hours in the dressing room, I left with a swimsuit wardrobe fit for a celebrity.

Here are a few tips I learned about how and when to use a personal stylist:
  • It's best to use a personal stylist when you're updating your wardrobe with multiple pieces
  • Have a designated budget in mind
  • Be clear on what you like and what you want to avoid, but be open to new ideas
  • Be clear on patterns or colors that appeal to you
  • Try everything on even if at first it doesn't seem like it will work
  • Be a fit fanatic, don't buy anything that can't be tailored to fit you perfectly
Next time you're dreading to shop for something particular, try a personal stylist, it can make all the difference!

Food (Vegan/ Vegetarian): Indian (Bengali Style) Tofu with Green Beans and Potatoes

Now that I'm into the eighth month of my 2011 resolution to really learn how to cook, I decided it was time to tackle Indian cooking. Plus, I've been wrestling with the idea of becoming a vegetarian/ vegan and Indian food is a great healthy option for vegetarians, but indian cooking can be quite labor intensive, time consuming and complex. I've been fearful of Indian cooking for a long time, if the spices are not mixed properly and added at the right times, the dish can quickly turn into a disaster. Oh, and did I mention, also a fire hazard. Needless to say, up until now I've shied away from it.

Earlier in the year, when I tackled Julia Child's Beef Bourguignon and Coq Au Vin, I learned about the French concept of "mise en place" meaning "everything in its place". This essentially means that when tackling difficult recipes or combining complex food flavorings, it's best to have all the ingredients washed, cut, measured, and separated into piles or cups before even starting.

After giving it some thought, I realized that this French phrase could help me with Indian cooking. Now, true Indian cooks, like my mother and my grand-mother, do exactly the opposite of "mise en place". Their definition of measuring means a pinch here and a handful there. I new that as a novice to Indian cooking, this "indian style" of measuring would not work for me. So, I bought some small prep bowls and measured out all the spices and washed and cut all the ingredients before hand and found that this concept really works. In Indian cooking, most of the time, the spices have to be added quickly and at the right time, and if you're concerned about measuring and cooking at the same time, then there is much more room for error.

Using this French concept I created a recipe for Bengali Style Tofu with Green Beans and Potatoes. It's a relatively easy recipe and a great option as a side dish with rice and dal or even as a main dish for vegetarians and even vegans. Plus, it's healthy and delicious too!

Bengali Style Tofu with Green Beans and Potatoes

(4 Persons)

Ingredients:
  • 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
  • 1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
  • 1/3 teaspoon turmeric
  • 2 large garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
  • 2 dry red chili pods, broken into bits  (mildly spicy), add more chili pods for additional spice
  • 1 package of extra firm tofu, cubed
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and left whole
  • 4 small red potatoes, cubed
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
Directions:
  1. Measure out the spices and place them right next to the stove top in separate piles or cups.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. When it is hot, add the tofu and saute for about 5 minutes.
  3. Remove the tofu from the pan and let it rest on a plate lined with a sheet of paper towel.
  4. Heat the additional 2 tablespoons of oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. When it is hot, add the mustard seeds. Keep a pot lid handy, as the seeds may splatter and fly all over. When the splattering subsides, add the turmeric, garlic, and chili pieces and fry until the garlic turns light golden (about 30 seconds).
  5. Add the beans and potatoes. Let the vegetables sizzle undisturbed for one minute. Fry the vegetables, by turning them, for about 5 minutes. Add about 1/4 cup of water along with salt and the mustard powder and mix well.
  6. Add the tofu back into the skillet and mix well.
  7. Reduce the heat to low or medium-low and cook covered, until the vegetables are thoroughly cooked (about 20 minutes).
  8. Uncover and continue cooking, turning and tossing the vegetables until they look dry and glazed (3-4 minutes).
  9. Enjoy!
Serve with Rice and Dal.

Food: Salmon Pasta Salad

I made this recipe for dinner last night and it was easy, healthy and delicious. The best part is that it can be eaten either cold or at room temperature and so it's perfect for a weeknight meal on a hot summer day. It would also be a great option for a picnic lunch.

Food: Margherita with Grilled Chicken Paninis

I love panini sandwiches and I always knew they were easy to make. But, I never tried to make them at home because I thought I needed a panini grill, and another expensive kitchen gadget just wasn't in my budget nor did I have the storage space.

Initially, I tried to use my cast iron griddle to make panini sandwiches by flipping them over and searing both sides, but my paninis always fell apart. Then I saw Mario Batali's Grill Press and it seemed like the solution I was looking for. It was inexpensive, $20 rather than the $200 I'd have to spend for a panini grill, it was small and easy to store, and could be used with the cast iron griddle that I already own.

Mario Batali's Red Grill Press and Cast Iron Griddle

I made Margherita with Grilled Chicken Panini Sandwiches last night and they turned out beautifully. It's super easy, quick, healthy and delicious!

Margherita with Grilled Chicken Paninis

(Makes 2 sandwiches)
Ingredients:
  • 2 slices of fresh mozzarella cheese
  • 4 slices of thick bread
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 chicken breast
  • 6 large fresh basil leaves
  • 1 large tomato (6 tomato slices)
  • olive oil for seasoning
Directions:
  1. Preheat the cast iron griddle pan and the grill press over medium heat.
  2. Season both sides of the chicken breast with salt, pepper and olive oil.
  3. When the griddle is hot, sear both sides of the chicken breast until cooked all the way through (about 5 minutes on each side).
  4. Let the cooked chicken breast rest for about 5 minutes and then cut into diagonal slices.
  5. Place 1 slice of mozzarella cheese atop 1 bread slice, and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Top with 3 basil leaves, and 3 tomato slices. Sprinkle with more salt and pepper and top with 2 slices of chicken breast, and then top with the second bread slice. Brush both sides of the sandwich with olive oil.
  6. Grill the sandwich until the bread is golden brown and the cheese melts, pressing down with the grill press, about 4 minutes. Transfer the sandwich to a plate and serve.
  7. Enjoy!

Fashion: On The Go Manicure/ Pedicure

Have you ever looked down at your hands or feet and realized that you're in desperate need of a manicure/ pedicure but you just don't have the time to sit and literally wait for paint to dry? Well, this happens to me pretty regularly.

So when I heard of an instant manicure/ pedicure solution I knew I had to try it. Beauty enthusiasts  have been raving about Sally Hansen's Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips. However, I'm not usually a fan of nail art, at the salon it's too expensive and I certainly don't have enough skill to do it myself at home and so I was a little skeptical.

Sally Hansen Salon Effects in "Frock Star"

When I opened the box and saw nail stickers, I was ready for a refund. But, I tried to keep an open mind and still give them a try... and I'm glad I did. Within 20 minutes I had a new pedicure and never had to leave the couch.

The nail stickers are quite easy to put on, shape very well to your natural nail and last for about two weeks. The best part... no drying time! Here's a little hint: to make them last longer, put on a clear coat of polish on top.

I wasn't adventurous enough to try nail art on my hands and so I thought I'd try them on my feet first. I tried "Frock Star" and I love it, my feet are ready for a night out. Now, what to do about that manicure?

Fashion: Cruelty-Free Drugstore Makeup Brands

I think most women like to browse the makeup aisles at their local drugstore, and I'm definitely no exception. Although most of the times I don't actually need anything, but sometimes a $1.99 lipgloss is exactly the little pick me up that I've been looking for.

Since I like to browse the drugstore beauty aisles so much, I thought I'd do some research and figure out which drugstore makeup brands are free of animal testing.

Through my research I realized that sadly only two of the major cosmetics companies are animal cruelty-free, Revlon and Almay. Revlon and Almay have proven to PETA that they perform no animal testing on either their ingredients or on their finished products.

Sadly, many of the cosmetic companies claim their products to be cruelty-free because they don't perform animal testing on their finished products, however, many of the companies still perform horrific animal testing for their ingredients.

The following drugstore cosmetics companies are certified to be cruelty-free for both their finished products and ingredients according to PETA: Revlon, Almay, Physician's Formula and e.l.f Cosmetics (can be found at Target).

So from now on when I'm browsing the beauty aisles at my local drugstore, I can still get a little pick me up and remain true to my conscience.

Fashion: Espadrille Wedges...the one shoe that every girl needs for the summer

Anyone who knows me well knows that I LOVE designer shoes, they're beautiful and in most cases even quite comfortable. I'm always on the look out for a great pair of shoes and if I had to pick only one pair for the summer, they would have to be espadrille wedges. Wedges are stable, easy to walk in, and give you height without having to walk around on your tip-toes. For vertically challenged girls, like myself, wedges are an absolute must in your closet.

Espadrille wedges are everywhere this season, they come in a variety of colors and heel heights, but my favorite has to be Jimmy Choo's "Polar" Espadrille Wedge Slingbacks. I love that it comes in nude patent leather which blends into your feet and basically makes your legs look about 4 inches longer.

Try on a pair of espadrille wedges and see how you like them, I think you'll love them as much as I do!

Fashion, Food and Fitness in San Francisco, California

During a three day weekend it's easy to re-boot your mind and body in sunny California. My husband and I spent a long weekend in San Francisco and we did just that with fashion, food and fitness.

Fashion-Union Square in downtown San Francisco: San Francisco is one of the trendiest cities in the country, just look around you at all the shoppers and it's easy to tell that you're surrounded by style.

Union Square

Union Square is mostly known for designer fashion and is home to quite a few flagship stores such as Juicy Couture and Levis. If you're a shoe lover like I am, then don't miss the "10022 Shoe" department at Saks Fifth Avenue...trust me, it's something to see.

Also don't miss visiting Maiden Lane in Union Square where you can find designer boutique stores such as Seven Jeans, Theory, and Tory Burch. Maiden Lane is closed off for pedestrian traffic only and so you can even get a quick bite to eat right on the street.

Maiden Lane

Food-Napa Valley: The next day we were off to Napa Valley for some great wine and food. The Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena is a must see. If you're visiting during the weekend try to stop in at a cooking demonstration which includes a take-home recipe, a tasting and a glass of wine. Our demonstration was for an artichoke and fennel salad which was delicious! Next, don't miss eating at the Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant. In all seriousness the cod and broccoli dish I had is one of the most delicious meals of my life, I never realized fish and broccoli could be so tasty. Plus, if the weather permits sit outside on the patio and enjoy the view of the Napa Valley hills.

Culinary Institute of America in St. Helena

I'm sure that the Culinary Institute of America has great desserts too but my heart was set on eating dessert at the famous Bouchon Bakery in Yountville. Because the bakery is so well known expect to stand in line, during the weekends, for at least 30 minutes. But, it was worth it, we ordered cookies, croissants and macaroons and they even packed it up for us for our flight back home.

Bouchon Bakery in Yountville

We couldn't go all the way to Napa Valley and not take a wine tour and so after the bakery we were off to Domaine Chandon right down the street from Bouchon Bakery for wine tasting. Domaine Chandon is best known for their sparking wines and is a large and well respected winery. In one flight you get four full glasses of wine and even get to take the wine glass home as a souvenier.

Since Domaine Chandon is a large winery we wanted to also visit a small family owned winery and we were off to Madonna Estate in Napa. The experiences are quite different. The tasting at Domaine Chandon was like visiting a trendy wine bar in the city with large crowds and beautiful surroundings while the tasting experience at Madonna Estate was very personal and the proprietor even gave me a fresh cut rose from his personal flower garden. I bought two bottles of wine to bring back home which  now is easier than ever with Wine Skins which are sealed bubble wraps shaped like wine bottles which protect the wine bottles in your luggage. Our wine bottles were kept perfectly intact in our checked luggage.

Fitness- Solage Spa in Calistoga: For our last day in California we were off to relax at the Solage Spa in Calistoga. Calistoga is best known for their geo-thermal mineral water which is natural spring water at around 110 degrees Fahrenheit. At Solage Spa we had the Mudslide Experience. They call the system "The Mud," "The Waters" and "The Rest." First you rest in a heated private room with a body mask of a mineral enriched clay and volcanic ash blend mixed with pure essential oils. Next you go rest in a tub of geo-thermal mineral water. Lastly, you finish off taking a power nap in a sound/vibration chair. After the hour long treatment you feel fully relaxed and your skin is soft and moisturized. Afterwards take a swim in their geo-thermal mineral water pool overlooking the Napa Valley hills, it's paradise.

In three short days, I left San Francisco with some new great clothes, great food and wine, and fully relaxed from a great spa experience.

Food: Banana Bread

My husband and I usually go to the grocery store on Sundays for the week and the bananas that were so fresh on Sunday afternoon don't look as fresh and appetizing anymore by the following Saturday morning. I've been making this banana bread recipe for years to use up those left over bananas. The recipe actually works best with very ripe bananas. It's super easy and within an hour those old bananas will turn into fresh and delicious banana bread.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 medium bananas, mashed
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl combine oil, sugar, eggs, mashed bananas and vanilla extract. Add in flour, baking soda and cinnamon and mix on low speed with an electric mixer. Pour mixture into a greased loaf pan and bake for 1 hour. Let cool before cutting.

Since there are no preservatives the banana bread stays fresh for only one week in an air tight container.

Enjoy!

Food: "Elephant-Ear" Puff Pastries

In Indian culture, when friends or family stop by for a visit they are often treated to tea (chai) and biscuits. However, it's not always easy to have cookies or pastries on hand to offer your guests. That's why I wanted to create a pastry that I can keep frozen until I'm ready to serve it to my guests. My solution ..."elephant-ear" puff pastries. They're easy to make, can be kept frozen in individual servings, bakes within minutes, and are super delicious. Your friends and family will be delighted! Plus, who can resist freshly baked pastries?

Ingredients
  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup sugar with a pinch of salt
Directions
  1. Lay the puff pastry sheet on a flat surface and coat both sides with the sugar/ salt mixture.
  2. Fold the puff pastry sheet into "elephant ear" shapes.
    1. Puff pastry sheets are usually folded to form three rectangles (similar to a folded letter).
    2. Fold the left side into the center of the left rectangle, which is the first fold.
    3. Fold the first fold into the left crease in the puff pastry sheet, which is the second fold.
    4. Fold the second fold into the center of the middle rectangle, which is the third fold.
    5. Do the same three folds on the right side.
    6. Layer the left folds onto the right fold to form a roll.
    7. Cut the roll into ½ inch slices to create individual servings of “elephant ears”
3.      Keep “elephant-ears” frozen in a ziplock bag until ready to bake and serve.
4.      Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, flip over after 5 minutes.

Food: Chicken, Avocado & Spinach Layered Sandwich

If you're like me, and feel exhausted after a long day at work and the thought of making dinner feels more like a chore than a stress relief, then this recipe is for you. I made this recipe for dinner last night within 30 minutes and my husband couldn't have been more thrilled. It's an easy recipe that looks quite impressive and is a great weeknight meal option. Oh, and it's healthy too!

(Serves 2)
Ingredients:
  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry, thawed and cut into 6 rectangles
  • 2 boneless and skinless chicken breast halves
  • salt
  • pepper
  • olive oil, for drizzling
  • 2 tablespoons of low-fat mayonnaise
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 avocado, thinly sliced into 8 pieces
  • 1 cup of baby spinach leaves
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, place the pastry sheet rectangles on the parchment paper. Using a fork, prick the top of the pastry sheet rectangles. You want the pastry sheet rectangles to remain flat while they're baking rather than puffing up. Cover the pastry sheet rectangles with another piece of parchment paper and place another baking sheet on top. The pressure of the second baking sheet helps to keep the pastry sheet rectangles flat.  (Easier Option: You can substitute any type of bread here instead of puff pastry.)
  2. Bake the pastry sheet rectangles for 25 minutes until golden and let cool before handling.
  3. Preheat a grill pan and season the chicken with salt, pepper and olive oil. Grill until the chicken is cooked through.
  4. In a small bowl, mix together the cayenne pepper and the mayonnaise to create a spicy mayo.
  5. Assemble the Layered Sandwich: pastry sheet rectangle at the bottom, sliced pieces of chicken breast, spinach, 2 avocado slices, pastry sheet rectangle with some spicy mayo on the underside of the pastry sheet rectangle, and repeat the layering.
  6. Enjoy!

Fashion: High Heel Comfort

Christian Louboutin Maralena Crystal-Covered Mesh Peep Toe Pumps

I love high heels! I love everything about them, but I don't love how my feet feel after a day of walking around in them. Anyone who lives in a city knows that trying to catch the bus or running across the street while darting through traffic is hard enough, and doing it all in heels is just unthinkable.

A few years ago I was in Paris, France for a week and as I watched French women walk full speed on brick cobble streets while wearing 4 inch heels I thought to myself, do they just have a high heel gene that I'm missing? What's their secret?

Well, it turns out the secret is cushion inserts. Think of cushion inserts as alterations for your shoes to conform them to fit perfectly to your feet.

Dr. Scholl's For Her makes great gel inserts for high heels and they're quite affordable. Here are a few tips on wearing high heels with more comfort:

  • Notice any problems with your new heels by wearing them around the house to break them in
  • If your feet slide forward then Insoles might fix the problem
  • If the balls of your feet or your toes hurt then Ball of Foot pads may help
  • If your heels hurt (especially in slides or slingbacks) then Heel Cushions might help
  • If the back of your heel is sensitive and rubs against the back of your heels then Heel Liners will fix the problem
  • Use anti-perspirant on the soles of your feet to prevent blisters
By using these tips we can all wear high heels without the pain afterwards!

Fashion: Colors Aren't Just for Crayons

Look at your wardrobe. Do you have a lot of black, gray or beige? If so, you might be stuck in a color rut. Don't feel bad, most of us are. It's just so easy to reach for those trusty black pants or that gray sweater that matches with everything. But, spring is officially here and the time has come to release our inner fashionistas and add some color to our everyday wear.

Some of us shy away from color because we just don't know what goes with what. There's no reason to be afraid anymore... it's easy to add color to any outfit if we understand how to use a color wheel.

Neutrals: But, before we start coloring, we need to understand neutrals. Black, brown, gray, tan, navy, white, olive, blue jeans and even animal prints are neutrals. This means that these colors go with all other colors and with each other. They are to be used as building blocks for an outfit rather than as a whole outfit. For example, Kerry Washington anchors her vibrant print dress and red shoes with an animal print clutch.

Using Neutrals as an Anchor

Pop of Color: Now, that we've covered the neutrals, let's start coloring. A very easy way to add color to an outfit is to add a "pop of color" by adding one strong color to an otherwise neutral outfit. This one color should stand out on it's own and be paired with one other neutral color. Gillian Jacobs adds a "pop of color" with a fuchsia skirt paired with an otherwise all black outfit.

Pop of Color

Color Combinations Using a Color Wheel: Now, let's dive deeper into adding more color to an outfit by combining two or more colors together.

Basic Color Wheel

This is a basic color wheel which includes the primary colors (red, yellow and blue), secondary colors (orange, green and violet) and intermediate colors (orange-yellow, red-orange, violet-red, blue-violet, blue-green and yellow-green).

Pick 2 Diad Colors: Try combining colors that are two colors apart on the color wheel, such as Blake Lively does with her blue gown and her violet suede pumps.

Diad Colors

Pick 2 Complementary Colors: Try combining two colors that are direct opposites on the color wheel. This creates a dramatic look which can be too striking if primary or secondary colors are used and so subdue this look by using two intermediate colors instead, such as Diane Krueger does with her burnt orange (red-orange) dress and her turquoise (blue-green) shoes.

Complementary Colors

Pick 2 Primary or Secondary Colors: Try combining 2 primary colors or 2 secondary colors. These colors blend the best when one bright hue is used with a dark or light hue, for example Emma Rossum combines her jade green dress (dark hue of green a secondary color) with deep violet shoes and belt (bright hue of violet a secondary color).

Pick 2 Secondary Colors

Pick 3 Primary or Secondary Colors: If you're feeling very colorful try all 3 primary colors or all 3 secondary colors, such as Camille Belle does with her green pants, violet top and orange jacket.

Pick 3 Secondary Colors

Finish the Look with a Metallic: Now, that we know how to add color, we need to tie the colors together with a metallic by using a yellow metallic piece for warm colors or a white metallic piece for cool colors. Camille Belle ties her Pick 3 look together by finishing it with a yellow metallic belt and clutch.

Warmth and Coolness of a Color Wheel

With these basic concepts in mind, you can easily add some color to any outfit and let your inner fashionista run free!

Fashion: F-A-C-E-S (Five Easy Steps to Shopping like a Pro)

If you find yourself overwhelmed with all the choices when you go shopping or easily swayed by the sales rack and wish you had a pocket stylist, then this acronym is for you. I use this acronym every time I  go shopping and it's served me well each time. Each piece of clothing or accessory you buy must meet each of the five criteria.

F: fit
A: age appropriateness
C: color
E: expense
S: situation

Fit: Clothing, shoes, sunglasses, handbags, or whatever else it is must fit you properly and be right for your body or face shape. If it doesn't already fit perfectly (and few things do) it should be easily altered. If not, then put it back. Finding a tailor you trust is very important. A great fit can make anything look great, and makes everything look more expensive.

Age Appropriateness: Just because you can fit into a miniskirt or into junior sizes doesn't mean that you should. Age inappropriate clothes make things look cheap and like you're trying too hard. Think of it as a bad botox job.

Color: Certain colors can make you look great and awake, others just wash you out. Know what colors look great on you and stick to them. Blondes look great in light colors such as pinks, whites, and light blues. Dark brunettes look great in darker colors such as reds, turquoise, and deep purples. If you look great in white gold then you probably have cool tones and light colors look great on you. If you look great in yellow gold then you probably have warm tones and darker colors look great on you. There are few people who have a neutral tone, and they're the lucky ones because they can wear a wide range of colors. The right color can change an outfit from looking just okay to "Wow, you look great!"

Expense: Usually at department stores or high end boutiques people say to themselves, "this is too expensive" and become discouraged. If you find yourself doing that, you might be missing out on great style opportunities. Now, if you can't afford it, then you should put it back. But, don't put it back, just because you think it might be too expensive. This is where you need to do a cost per wear analysis (CPW). For example, a winter coat that costs $500 is expensive. But, if you wear this coat every day during the winter say for three months, then your CPW for that year is $5.50 and becomes even less year after year. All of a sudden that expensive $500 coat has become as affordable as a daily cup of coffee.

Situation: Lastly, do you have anywhere to wear it? For example, that beautiful evening dress may fit properly, be age appropriate, be in a great color, and on sale, but if you have nowhere to wear it then it's just going to sit in the back of your closet and collect dust and most likely be forgotten. Make sure you have somewhere to wear it and it easily fits into your personal style, otherwise put it back.

If you follow this five step acronym, then slowly you can build a wardrobe fit for a fashion stylist with clothes that you love and look great on you!

Food & Fitness: Chili Oil

Chili Oil is used as a condiment in many asian cuisines. It's a quick and easy way to spice up any dish specific to your taste. Plus the capsicum in chili oil is known to be an anti-inflammatory agent that helps stimulate blood circulation which can be helpful in preventing heart disease and cancer. Some also believe it helps improve metabolism and even helps trim body weight.

Ingredients:
  • 10-12 dried red chilies (Thai red chilies are the spiciest)
  • 1/2 cup peanut or canola oil
Directions:

1. Roast the dried red chilies for 10-15 minutes in a 125 degree oven, until they become a little plump.
2. Place the roasted red chilies in a food processor and grind the chilies until they create a fine chili powder.
3. Heat the oil up in a frying pan under low heat. If the oil is too hot, it will burn the chilies. The oil is ready when it starts to glisten.
4. Fry the chili powder in the oil for about 2 to 3 minutes.

The chili oil can be stored in an air tight container for up to one month.

Fashion: Tie on a Scarf for Spring 2011

An easy and affordable way to update your wardrobe this spring is to tie on a scarf. Scarves are a great add-on to any simple outfit and can be tied up in many ways. Here is a list of the most popular scarf looks for Spring 2011:

Silk Scarf: Silk scarves are everywhere this season. It's the easiest kind to tie on and the most versatile. Just tie one on over a tee-shirt and you'll look casually-chic. See the model below for inspiration.

Animal Print Scarf: Animal print scarves have been a trend since 2008, and three years later it's still going strong. With so many celebrities having gotten their picture taken wearing an animal print scarf, this trend is no where near being extinct. Just tie one on over a neutral top such as black, gray or white and you'll be ready for Spring 2011. See Jessica Alba below for inspiration.

Fringe Scarf: Fringed scarves were first seen on the runways this past fall and it looks like this trend is continuing on to Spring 2011. Use a fringed scarf as a dramatic touch to an easy outfit. Just remember to keep your other accessories, such as your handbag, simple. See Hillary Duff below for inspiration.

Floral Scarf: There is no better way to add a touch of spring to your wardrobe this season than a floral scarf. Floral scarves add a touch of girliness to any outfit. See the model below for inspiration.

Tie Dye Scarf: A big trend this season is a retro flashback to the 70s. A tie dye scarf adds a jolt of vibrant color to any outfit. Just remember, if you were old enough to do this trend once back in the 70s, then skip it this time around. See Vanessa Hudgens below for inspiration.

Square Scarf: Square scarves are not just a trend but a daily accessory in many countries, such as France. This style has been popular for years and was brought into the fashion spotlight years ago by Hermes. It's big once again for Spring 2011. It's a great way to add a dash of color to any outfit, without adding any bulk. See the model below for inspiration.

No matter what style you choose this Spring, just remember to keep the rest of your outfit simple and just have fun!

Fashion: Spring 2011 Handbag Trends

Spring is just around the corner and although it's still too cold in some parts of the country to start wearing spring clothes, we can all start carrying the handbags of the season.

Satchel: Eva Longoria made this style popular by being seen carrying her satchel around while running errands in Hollywood. The satchel is a great option for an everyday casual bag especially when it's in a bright spring color.

Crossbody: Taylor Swift made this style popular when she was photographed with her Ralph Lauren cross body bag. This style is particularly chic when the bag has a long metal chain. Since the cross body bag usually hits everyone right at the hip, opt for colors that blend in easily to your outfit such as white, gray or beige.

Tote: This style was made popular by many celebrities such as Victoria Beckham and Oprah. It's a great option for an everyday work bag, especially in a neutral color such as black. Look for options with some sort of interesting detail, such as pleats or soft cracked leather.

Food: Cranberry and White Chocolate Chip Cookies

I had a dessert party last night and these cookies were a big hit! They're a fun alternative to chocolate chip cookies and are particularly nice during the holiday season because of the white and red colors. Since they have an oatmeal base, they're a healthier alternative to chocolate chip cookies. They're also great with a cup of coffee or tea the next morning!

Cranberry and White Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup margarine, melted
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cups old fashioned oatmeal
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
Directions:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together the margarine, sugar and egg until smooth.
  3. In a separate large bowl, combine the cinnamon, flour, oatmeal and baking soda.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients, and then add in cranberries and white chocolate chips.
  5. Form into small balls and bake on a greased cookie sheet for 12 minutes.
  6. Enjoy!

Fashion: Spring 2011 Nail Colors

Chanel has done it again. They kicked off the Spring 2011 nail color trends by debuting their Spring 2011 Nail Lacquer line with "Pearl Drop" (natural nude), "Black Pearl" (gun metal gray) and "Peche Nacree" (peachy pink).

For organic alternatives try Sparitual's "Water Lily" (natural nude), "Hypnotic" (gun metal gray) or "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (peachy pink).

Fashion Experts are also predicting blues (think Tiffany's box) and lavenders to be very popular for Spring 2011. These colors can be a little difficult to pull off, but if you're feeling adventurous try Sally Hansen's "Barracuda" (tiffany blue) or Estee Lauder's "Violet Diva" (lavender).

They're all worth a try!
